Midlands– Two people have died in separate fatal road accidents along the Harare-Bulawayo and Shurugwi-Unki roads on Wednesday, police have confirmed.

In the first incident, which occurred at the 268-kilometer peg along the Harare-Bulawayo road around 7 p.m., one person was killed when he was struck by a vehicle.

Claudious Nhemwa (53) of Hillside, Harare, was driving a Mercedes-Benz 350 with two passengers when he hit Kumbirai Mafuve, a pedestrian who had disembarked from a commuter omnibus and was crossing the road.

 Mafuve died on the spot.

Another fatal accident occurred at the 16-kilometer peg along the Shurugwi-Unki road around the same time.

Partner Gonye (26) of Chironde Village 5, Shurugwi, was driving a white Toyota Mark X from Shurugwi town to Chironde Village.

In the opposite direction, Beven Gombe also from Chironde Village, was driving a white Toyota Hilux.

It is alleged that Gonye attempted to overtake another vehicle, resulting in a head-on collision with Gombe’s vehicle.

Gombe died on the scene, while a passenger in his vehicle sustained injuries and was taken to Shurugwi District Hospital for treatment.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to the hospital for postmortem.

Meanwhile, the Midlands province police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko urged motorists and the public to obey road rules and regulations to prevent such tragedies.
