2 arrested for fuel smuggling

CHECHECHE-Police in Chisumbanje have arrested two men for smuggling fuel from Mozambique for sale in the country.

Manicaland Provincial Police Deputy Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the arrest of Gondai Madhobhi (33) of house number 263 Phase 1 Checheche  and Tawonga Shonhiwa (35)of house number 529 phase 3 Checheche.

Circumstances are that on September 26 at 1930 hours, police received a tip off to the effect that there was a motor vehicle which was coming from Mabee Village in Chief Garahwa heading towards Checheche Growth Point with 7 by 250 litres of fuel smuggled from Mozambique.

Police reacted to the tip off and intercepted the vehicle at Matikwa B village. Police arrested the driver and the passenger in the vehicle.

Police discovered that the vehicle had 1 750litres of fuel in 7 by 250 plastic containers from Mozambique.

Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said the two were taken to Chisumbanje Police Station. He added that the two were charged with contravening section 8(1) of the Environmental Management Act chapter 20:27”Found in possession of hazardous substance without permission.

Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said investigations are in progress.
