Chipinge-When Jerny Ngombe retired to bed, as usual she expected to wake up the following morning to see her two jewels, unfortunately the gods of death had other ideas when her two children perished in an inferno on the night.
On February 17 in Chiso Village, Chipinge, two minors, Elina Gore (7) and Laiza Gore (14) were burnt to death as the hut they were sleeping in caught fire, Manicaland Province ZRP spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka told The Midweek Watch.
Chinyoka said that on the fateful evening the deceased’s mother, Jerny Ngombe(45) retired to sleep in her bedroom leaving behind her two children in their thatched bedroom using a firewood log to light the room.
Later in the evening Ngombe was awakened by the cranking noise of fire and rushed to her children’s bedroom and tried to open the door which was locked from inside but, to no vail.
She then called for help from her neighbor, Governor Simango (32) who kicked in the door of the burning bedroom and rescued Laiza but was unable to rescue Elina since the thatched roof hand given in.
The fire was later extinguished by the villagers and Elina’s body was retrieved, but was burnt beyond recognition.
Liaza later died on 18 February along the way to Victoria Chitepo Hospital as she had sustained serious burns.
