MASVINGO RURAL-A classroom block at Marongere Primary School in Zimuto, Masvingo Rural was reduced to a heap of rubbles on Sunday after strong winds tore off its roof.
The incident, which occurred during the school holidays, fortunately resulted in no injuries as pupils and most staff were not on the premises at the time.
However, the damage is expected to disrupt learning activities when the new term begins if urgent repairs are not carried out.
The school Head, Peter Zingoni confirmed the damage and indicated that the matter had been reported to Schools Inspector Gunguwo. At least one block is currently unusable. Furniture and learning materials inside the affected classrooms were also exposed to rain and wind, raising concerns about further losses.
Parents and community leaders have expressed concern over the safety of learners and are calling for immediate intervention from relevant authorities. “We are relieved that no children were hurt, but the situation needs urgent attention before schools reopen,” said one parent.
Masvingo North legislator Brian Mudumi said efforts are now underway to mobilize resources for repairs, with the school appealing for assistance from government, donors, and well-wishers, “Yes it’s true, the tragedy happened on Sunday and I have sent my team on the ground to assess the situation as I am currently in South Africa, efforts are now underway to mobilize resources from our side, the government and well wishers, we are hoping that we complete the repairs before schools opens so that learning will not be interrupted” he said.
