Southern Rocks back with a bang

Date:

The Masvingo based Southern Rocks cricket team will be in action this Friday and Sunday at Masvingo Sports Club when they take on the Mutare based Mountaineers franchise team in back to back limited over one day games.

According to the Rocks general manager, Boniface Machuwaire, the team have secured the services this year of former England test player, Dominic Bess, currently playing for Somerset in the English county championship and Zimbabwe born Eddie Byrom who currently plays for Glamorgan.   While they will not be available for this weekends fixtures in Masvingo they will be in action at Masvingo Sports Club in two weeks time when the Rocks take on the Matabeleland Tuskers again in two back to back one dayers.   They will also turn out for the Rocks in the four day Logan Cup competition amongst the five domestic franchise teams scheduled to begin in December.  All those games will be played in Harare.

The Rocks will be captained by Richmond Mutumbami and will also feature players like Brian Mudzinganyama; Tendai Chisoro; William Mashinge and Sydney Murombo who turned out for the Rocks last year while new signings will include Jonathan Cambell, son of former Zimbabwe captain Alastair Campbell; all rounder Jayden Schadendorf and Alistair Frost who ,like Scahdendorf, has represented Zimbabwe at Under 19 level.

Although the likes of nationally contracted players like Sikander Raza and Blessing Muzarabani unavailable for the Rocks for the upcoming Masvingo games, because of national team commitments in Namibia, the talent on offer will provide a great deal of excitement for Masvingo cricket fans who will hopefully flock to the Masvingo Sports Club in large numbers.   Entrance to the ground is free.
