CHIPINGE-As fate would have it, a one and half year old baby boy survived after being dumped by his mother in a church toilet pit with faeces in Rimbi, Chipinge.
The Rimbi community was left speechless when a woman passerby heard baby cries from a 3m deep toilet pit today at around 7am.
The woman notified members of the community at the shops who reacted swiftly, teamed up and retrieved the baby unhurt.
Ward 21 councilor Raphias Semwayo confirmed the shocking incident to Midweek Watch.
“I can confirm that a baby boy (pictured) about one and half years old was retrieved from the pit toilet today by some brave men from the community. The baby is now in police custody as the police are searching for its parents,” he said.
One of the residents who helped to retrieve the baby Christopher Mtetwa narrated how they got the baby out of the toilet.
“The baby was discovered by a woman who was passing by the church at around past 7 in the morning. The woman heard the cries of a baby and notified her neighbour.
“The two rushed to the shops where they told some men who were there. I was also passing by the shops. I then abandoned my journey and rushed to the scene.
“We teamed up with other men and managed to get picks and shovels to dig the pit. We then dug a hole so that we let in one person down the toilet pit. We tied one young man and he went into the pit and picked up the baby.
“Luckily the toilet is not used much and there was not much dirty. When the baby was thrown in the pit he landed on his feet. We also discovered a towel in the toilet,” he said.
Mtetwa added that they moved around with the baby trying to identify the mother but to no avail.
“We went around the community trying to identify the mother of the baby but we could not locate her. The baby is now in police custody as they are now looking for the parents,” he said.
