Shurugwi motorist stoned by armed robbery, robbed valuables

Shurugwi- Three men armed with Columbian knives and stones attacked a motorist and robbed him of cash and property with a total value of US $1021. The incident occurred at Zingoma Gold base, Tebekwe, Shurugwi on 20 February 2024 at about 1900 hours.

Midlands Provincial Police Spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the development.

“We are appealing to anyone with information which can lead to the arrest of the suspects in both cases to approach any police station.” he added.

The complaint Isaiah Goredema, (34) of Makusha, Shurugwi was driving a Honda fit vehicle from peak mine to Zingoma Gold bases where he owns some ball mills with one passenger on board. He met three men who signalled him to stop and he complied. He lowered his window to talk to them.. 

Goredema noticed that one of them was holding a Columbian knife and quickly closed his window screen. One of the suspects hit the window screen with a stone and it was shattered. He went on to strike Goredema with stones on the head whilst one dragged him out of the vehicle.

They robbed him of cash US$761 and two cellphones. He managed to escape leaving the three suspects at the scene.  He mobilised a group of artisanal miners from a nearby Gold base and returned to the scene. The suspects fled away.

In another case, twelve men pounced at Slashwood mine, Gweru and got away with two and half tonnes of gold ore. The incident occurred on 20 February 2024 at about 2330 hours.

It is alleged that twelve men armed with Columbian knives, Iron bars and logs stormed the mine premises at around 2330 hours. They indiscriminatingly beat four men who were on guard all over their bodies. Suddenly a silver Nissan caravan without number plates drove in. The intruders loaded sacks with gold ore into the vehicle and drove away. 

A report was made to the police who attended the scene. The Police rushed the injured men to Gweru Provincial Hospital where three were treated and discharged while one got admitted.
