NYANGA – Police have arrested a 61-year-old man in connection with an armed robbery and motorcycle hijacking case that occurred near Nyamhuka 1 Bus Terminus on Tuesday evening.
The incident happened at around 20:00 hours when the complainant, Bester Dziwema (29), was approached by two men while parked at the terminus. The suspects, identified as Amos Mashava (61) of Watsomba, Mutasa, and an unidentified male accomplice, requested transport to Nyarukova Primary School.
According to police reports, Dziwema agreed to the fare of $5. However, upon arrival at the school, the situation turned violent. One of the suspects produced a pellet gun, threatening to shoot Dziwema if he did not comply. The attackers seized control of the motorcycle and forced the victim to sit between them as they drove back toward the town center. The ordeal continued until the suspects returned to the bus terminus, where they reportedly attempted to hijack another parked vehicle. During the commotion, Dziwema managed to leap from the motorcycle and escape to safety.
Officers from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Nyanga responded swiftly to the report. Upon spotting the authorities, the suspects attempted to flee on foot into the darkness. Following a brief pursuit, police apprehended Mashava, though the second suspect remains at large. Authorities recovered the pellet gun used in the commission of the crime, along with the stolen motorcycle and property valued at $1,350.
Manicaland province acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka told The Midweek Watch that investigations are ongoing to track down the second suspect and he has urged the public to prioritize their safety during such encounters, advising victims to comply with armed demands and report to the nearest police station as soon as possible.
