MASVINGO RURAL-The Bere family has elected Murombe Mahwekwe (85) as the new substantive Chief replacing Phineas Tafireyi who died in 2021.
The elections to choose the new chief were conducted yesterday in the presence of the Provincial Chiefs Council officials who oversaw the 85 year old descending to the throne.
He takes over reigns from Phenias Tafireyi Jnr who held the position in acting capacity for the past two years
David Masomere the Bere family spokesperson confirmed the latest development and said a decision to select Mahweke as the new chief was reached unanimously.
“We have five families inline on the throne of the Bere chieftainship which are the Makamure, Mboko, Mambanje, Muzhiravanji and Mupama.
“During the selection it was discovered that all the other families had previously held the throne and it was now up to the Makamure family to take the over the reigns and the family chose Murombe as the new chief and everyone agreed,” Masomere said.
Mosomere added that the new Chief has a mammoth task of unifying the family whose chieftainship had been marred by divisions when it was initially abolished by the white settler regime in 1926.
