NEMAMWA-Sean Christian Chasi (22) who was well known for being always high on hard drugs hung himself on a roof truss at his home.
Masvingo Province Police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Lorine Chanakira-Ndlovu confirmed the sad news, but did not give details as she was not in the office.
One of his close friends, Lenox Gwebu said Sean’s body was only discovered yesterday (14/11/23) after he went missing on Saturday last week.
“Sean was last seen on Saturday at a live band at the Nemamwa Cocktail Bar only to find his body hanging from a roof truss at his grandmother’s house.
“We have lost a talented artist who was very good at drawing images,” said Gwebu.
Sean was well known for taking hard drugs, but was undergoing light rehabilitation and his friends thought he was on the road to recovery.
He left a 2 paged letter which is in the hands of the Police and the contents will be made available to the family when they come for his burial since he was staying alone.
Sean’s mother is said to be based in Harare where she is married to a different man and she had not told him his father until he died.
“Sean wrote down all his friends’ names on the wall of the room that he hanged himself in including the name of his girlfriend whom he loved so much.
“At the bottom of the names he accused his mother of not revealing to him his father’s identity or showing him until the time of his death,” said one of the friends who was at the ffuneral.
His friends Lenox Gwebu and Tawanda Kimbini visited his residence after they tried to call him on his cell phone which was not being answered.
The friends then called his number while at the residence and they heard the phone ringing and they peeped through the window and that is when they saw his body hanging from a roof truss.
The Police were informed and they took the body which was already producing an unpleasant odour to Nyaradzo Parlour in Masvingo City.
Her mother is expected to come from Harare for the burial which is set for Mangwandi Cemetery in Masvingo according to sources at the funeral which was also attended by The Midweek Watch.
Drugs and substance abuse is on the rise in the country and recently SayWhat organisation held an awareness campaign in the ancient city against scourge which is threatening a whole generation.
At Ngomahuru Hospital in Masvingo Rural is said to have a ratio of 60 inmates on drugs rehabilitation compared to 30 mental patients according to the institution’s superintendent, Dr Parerenyatwa Maramba.
“The situation at Ngomahuru is worrisome as the place is full due to drugs and substance abuse patients who are on rehabilitation, where we sometimes have 60 patients on rehabilitation as to 30 mental patients at a time,” said Dr Maramba.
On the causes of suicide by drugs abusers, Dr Maramba said it could be caused by overdose of the substance, being an outcast in the society, lack of employment opportunities for young people or some would have become mental patients without knowing or those around the victim not being able to detect the problem.
