GWERU-Minister of State for Midlands Provincial Affairs and Devolution Owen Ncube has gifted inmates at Shurugwi, Kwekwe, and WhaWha Young Offenders’ Prisons with food and essential supplies.

Ncube’s gesture was driven by the philanthropic works of the First Family and in line with the government’s inclusive development agenda.

Midlands State Minister Owen Ncube tours prisons in the province.

This comes as the Midlands province joined the rest of the country in observing the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) open week.

During the open week, Ncube said the rehabilitation and future reintegration of inmates into society is a top priority for the Second Republic.

He lauded the First Lady’s “motherly intervention” in the successful rehabilitation of victims of drug and substance abuse.

Stakeholders and relatives of the inmates who visited the prisons during the open week emphasized the importance of the program in helping inmates bond with their loved ones and understand that “crime does not pay.”

Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Services (ZPCS)  Midlands Officer Commanding, Commissioner Somemore Gate said the prisons open week is part of the institution’s efforts to prepare inmates for successful reintegration into society, in line with the ZPCS’s mandate.

“This is a very important week on our calendar where we prepare our inmates to go back into society. When they mix and mingle with the outside world, they get the feeling that they are loved, and it also helps on their behavior while serving time,” Gate said.

“The ZPCS is making deliberate efforts to rehabilitate offenders and equip them with life skills to change their mindsets before they reintegrate into society,” added the Commissioner.
