Mutare City Council has embarked on a program to replace damaged water meters, The Midweek Watch can reveal.
Acting Town Clerk, Blessing Chafesuka said council has purchased at least 4,000 water meters to replace dama.
“This is a process we are just starting. It has always been our obligation to replace water meters, but the council was failing to deliver this mandate for years. So, we have decided to revive this service,” said Chafesuka.
The target is to replace between 12,000 to 15,000 water meters, which Chafesuka described as a “significant step” in addressing non-revenue water, as the council had not replaced water meters for more than three decades.
Chafesuka reiterated that the water meters will be replaced for free for all residents who not in arrears, and the replacements will be done on a first-come basis.
He also said council has a water network upgrade program targeting part of Sakubva, which will also address water losses which are prevalent in the oldest suburb in the Manicaland Province capital.
