MASVINGO-The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has recruited and deployed 7 472 teachers across the country to fill vacant posts ahead of the 2026 school calendar.

Confirming the development to The Midweek Watch, Director of Communications and Advocacy in the Ministry, Taungana Ndoro said the recruitment exercise was aimed at strengthening staffing levels in schools nationwide.
“We have successfully recruited and deployed at least 7 472 teachers across the country to fill attrition posts,” Ndoro said.
He explained that attrition posts are vacancies created through retirement, death, resignation, abscondment or other forms of staff exit.
“These posts had been left vacant for various reasons but we are happy that they have now been filled which will significantly improve the teacher pupil ratio nationwide,” he added.
Ndoro said the Ministry is starting 2026 on a high note with improved staffing levels expected to enhance the quality of education delivery.
The first school term for 2026 will officially start on Tuesday the 13th of January 2026 and end on 1 April 2026.
The teacher to pupil ratio in public schools is 1: 46 with the standard at 1: 20, and in private schools it is 1: 15, hence the filling up of the vacancies will go a long way in easing the pressure on educators.
