MASVINGO – Masvingo City Council is set to construct a second secondary school near the recently established Runyararo Swimming Pool, in a move aimed at expanding access to education as the population continues to grow.
The development was revealed by Town Clerk, Engineer Edward Mukaratirwa, during a full council meeting held yesterday (Monday).
Eng Mukaratirwa said the council has already submitted all the necessary documentation to the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and is now awaiting approval.

“We have initiated the process and, through the Director of Social Services, submitted our application to the Ministry, informing them of our intention to build the school,” he said.
He added that preliminary work is already underway with procurement processes for construction materials having started.
“Physical construction is expected to begin around June. All the paperwork is in place and once we receive approval from the Ministry, work will commence immediately,” he said.
Eng Mukaratirwa also noted that town planners are currently working on the school’s design plans.
Meanwhile, Masvingo City Mayor, Cllr Alec Tabe urged councillors to notify residents currently engaged in farming activities on the designated site to expedite their harvesting.
He also called on those using the area for parking purposes to vacate.
The Mayor further revealed that additional sporting facilities will be developed around the swimming pool area to support the new school.
“These will include netball courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts and tennis courts,” he said.
The school is expected to enroll its first Form One students in 2027, provided that the initial classroom block is completed on schedule.
The school will be the second for the city after Rujeko Secondary School which opened its doors in 2024.
