MASVINGO-Arguably the biggest chicks supplier in the southern region, Masvingo Chicks has been plunged into mourning following the death of its employee in an accident at Sebakwe Bridge around 11pm on Sunday.

Michael Smith died on the spot in a fatal road traffic accident which occurred at Sebakwe Bridge along the Chivhu–Mvuma where a Masvingo Chicks delivery truck was involved in a head on collision.

He was 35.

Michael’s brother Jacob Smith confirmed the sad news to The Midweek Watch.

The Midweek Watch was informed that a lowbed truck from Harare had broken down at Sebakwe River Bridge blocking the other lane and had no safety reflective triangles to alert other motorists.

A Masvingo-bound truck is said to have first collided with the stationary lowbed vehicle before veering off and hitting the Masvingo Chicks delivery truck on the passenger side, causing it to overturn.

“When the Masvingo bound truck hit the stationery lowbed truck it flew into the water and the driver and passengers had to swim to safety. It was really scary. I think if the Masvingo Chicks passenger had received assistance during the golden hour he could have made it, but the police arrived after 2 hours and there was no ambulance. Masvingo Chicks had to send a car to take the driver to hospital,” said a man who arrived at the scene some minutes after the accident had happened.

The driver of the delivery was taken to Masvingo 24-hour Medical Centre 2hours after the accident.

National Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said he had not received such a report.
