Man gets 28 years for raping woman (28)

Masvingo-Wellington Njanji (21) of Magege Village, Chief Njelele, Gokwe South, has been sentenced to 28 years in prison for raping a 28 year old woman and robbery.

Magistrate Bishard Chineka handed down the sentence, convicting Njanji of raping 28 year old woman from Dzviti Village in Headman Madyangove area under Chief Chivi, on January 10, 2021. He was sentenced to 8 years in prison for the rape charge and 20 years for robbery.

Prosecutor Liberty Hove outlined how Njanji broke into the woman’s home, threatened to kill her daughter, and forcibly had sexual intercourse with her without her consent. He then robbed her of US$20.

The court heard that the woman was medically examined, and the report confirmed the rape.

Magistrate Chineka condemned Njanji’s actions, stating that he showed no remorse for his crimes.

He said the harsh sentence is meant to send a strong message to would-be offenders, reaffirming the courts’ commitment to protecting citizens from gender-based violence.
