Evans Matabvu (38) from Shurugwi, who set a woman on fire after she had refused to lend him beer on credit has slapped  with a five year jail term by Gweru Regional Magistrate Rumbidzai Mugwagwa.

Matabvu was convicted at the close of the State case when he appeared in court facing charges of dousing Rindai Chinyaka (64) with petrol and setting her on fire.

The court heard that on the 15th of June 2023, Matabvu went to Chinyaka’s house and requested to drink beer on credit.

Chinyaka refused to consent to Matabvu’s request as he was owing her money for the beer he had taken prior to the incident.

Matabvu, the court heard, got furious and sprinkled Chinyaka with petrol before setting her ablaze.

The complainant was served by other shebene patrons who managed to put out the fire and reported the matter to the police leading to Matabvu’s arrest.
