MWENEZI-More than 12 schools converged at Mwenezi Government High School on 21 November for the Makope Sports Tournament, a vibrant event sponsored by Mwenezi North legislator, MP Master Makope, as part of a campaign to raise awareness on drug and substance abuse among learners.

The tournament drew participation from key Government departments, with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Arts, and the Ministry of Sport and Recreation represented by Mr Chikusvura, Mr Mapfumo, and Mr Ruzvidzo respectively.
Parents, teachers and pupils turned up in large numbers to witness the action-packed contests that ran throughout the day.
Pre-tournament favourites, Masogwe Primary School suffered an unexpected setback, leaving spectators questioning whether renowned coach Mr Madhange had lost his tactical edge. Masogwe, who usually dominant at both constituency and district level, fell short as Chingami Primary School, playing close to home, finally broke their season-long jinx to claim the football crown.

Speaking during the event, Mr Chikusvura, representing the District Schools Inspector, applauded the initiative.
“This is a big day for all of us. Thank you, Honourable Makope, for such a great tournament. drugs and substance abuse is a definite NO in this district,” he said.
Chingami Primary walked away with a full football kit, a trophy and US$200 for clinching first place. Zvirikure and Mushava secured second and third places, receiving a football kit and US$150, respectively.
In the netball category, Matande Primary School emerged champions, followed by Chingami and Pambe.
Teachers praised the initiative for promoting healthy lifestyles and reinforcing the anti-drug message. Masogwe Primary’s Mr Chigaba urged organisers to broaden participation next year.
“This is a great initiative. In future, may organisers include all traditional sporting disciplines such as volleyball. The tournament also deserves a place on the district sports calendar,” he said.
Mwenezi District NAPH chairperson, Miss Chuma, said the joy among learners was evident.
“Vana vafara. This must definitely be done again next year,” she said.
The tournament ended on a high note, with the community embracing sport as a powerful tool in the fight against drug and substance abuse.
It’s just a view and nothing else.
