MASVINGO – For a school that only opened its gates five years ago, Makanaka High School is already writing a remarkable chapter in Masvingo provinces’ sporting history.
The government-aided institution, located in Victoria Range one of Masvingo’s largest high-density suburbs, is making its debut on the national stage after its u17 girls rugby team qualified to represent Masvingo Province at the National Association of Secondary Heads (NASH) games being held in Marondera High School from today June 25 till tomorrow June 26.
The 16-member squad of Makanaka High will represent the province alongside Victoria High School in the boys’ category.
For Makanaka High, qualification is more than just participation, it is history in the making.
The school, established in 2021 and currently offering education from Form One to Form Four, is appearing at the national championships for the first time since opening its doors.
Speaking to the Midweek Watch, Makanaka High School head Johnson Gondongwe could not hide his excitement as the young institution prepares for its biggest sporting moment yet.
“I am very much delighted. It is the first time for the school to be in national competitions. The girls are learning many things through this experience and it gives us hope that our future is bright,” Gondongwe.
Beyond the excitement of competition, the achievement reflects the growing opportunities being created for young athletes in schools and demonstrates how emerging institutions can compete alongside established names.
For the players, the trip to Marondera is not only about rugby, it is about carrying the hopes of their school, community and province to a national platform.
