Local human rights defender scoops prestigious award

Masvingo – Angela Maduro, a 25-year-old human rights defender from Masvingo, has been honored with a prestigious award from Sexual Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) Africa Trust.

 The award is part of the Adolescent Activism Awards, celebrates the positive impact young people are making in the area of health and sexual reproductive rights.

Maduro was named the 2024 national winner in the category of Citizen Journalism, receiving a floating trophy, a certificate, and a cash prize of US$400. The award ceremony took place at the Holiday Inn hotel in Harare recently.

Advocate Martin Mureri, a member of parliament for Masvingo Urban who works with Maduro praised her milestone achievement.

“Angela is an exemplary individual who embodies the qualities of a dedicated and passionate human rights defender, her exceptional work ethic, coupled with her intelligence and creativity, makes her a shining star in her field, she dreams big, sets lofty goals, and works tirelessly to accomplish them, the sky is truly not the limit for this remarkable young woman,” said Mureri.

Maduro, a law graduate from Great Zimbabwe University, is also the founder of the Trinity Charity Foundation, an organization advocating for gender equality with a focus on male involvement.

Her organization has collaborated with various stakeholders on several community action projects focused on gender equality.

The recognition Maduro received from SRHR Africa Trust highlights her exceptional contributions to human rights and serves as an inspiration to many young activists striving for positive change.
