GWERU-A 24-year-old Gweru man has been fined US$126 or equivalent in local currency after he was convicted of stealing iron perimeter poles from a gated community development in Woodlands Park being developed by River Valley Group of Companies.

Tichaona Mundanga appeared before Gweru magistrate Paidamoyo Mafusire, who convicted him of theft and ordered him to pay the fine by April 17 or serve three months in prison.

The court heard that on March 25 at around 6am, Mundanga went to the Rivervalley construction site in Woodlands Phase 2 and used an unknown object to remove three iron poles from the perimeter fence before slipping away from the scene.

Later that day, he was arrested by officers from the Zimbabwe Republic Police in Ascot Extension while attempting to sell the stolen poles.

The complainant, Dereck Dube (55), a security officer employed by River Valley Properties positively identified the recovered poles.

The iron poles were recovered and held as exhibits at ZRP Nehanda in Gweru.
