Green Governance Trust (GGT) has launched a groundbreaking initiative aimed at promoting transparency and accountability in the mining sector in Manicaland province.

The project which brings together youths, journalists and the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) will empower young people to demand greater accountability from mining companies operating in their communities.

Through a data-driven advocacy approach, the initiative will provide youths with the skills and knowledge they need to access and analyze data about mining operations in their areas. This will enable them to hold companies accountable for their actions and ensure that they are contributing to the sustainable development of their communities.

The project is designed to address the lack of transparency and accountability that often characterizes the mining sector in Zimbabwe. By empowering youths to demand greater accountability, the initiative aims to promote more responsible and sustainable mining practices that benefit local communities.

“Mining is a significant sector in our province, but it is essential that we ensure that the benefits are shared equitably among all stakeholders. Access to data as youths will help those companies to be accountable for and the policy makers to actually come up with what is needed in mining communities. Residents in mining areas in Zimbabwe face numerous challenges including environmental degradation, displacements and lack of economic benefit from mining activities. By empowering youths to demand accountability and transparency, we can promote more sustainable and responsible mining practices that benefit our communities,” said MISA facilitator Malvin Mukudu.

He added that since the country had enacted the Freedom of Information Act and the Media Commission Bill, every citizen had the authority to take information he/she wants from the mining areas.

Despite Zimbabwe’s vast mineral wealth, with over 64 minerals, the country remains underdeveloped due to poor governance.

The initiative will also work with journalists to ensure that the public is informed about the issues affecting mining communities. By promoting greater transparency and accountability, the project aims to contribute to more sustainable and equitable development in Manicaland province.

Through this innovative initiative, GGT is taking a crucial step towards promoting accountability and transparency in the mining sector. By empowering youths and promoting data-driven advocacy, the project has the potential to make a lasting impact on the lives of communities in the province.
