Nomads remember Mucheke Old People’s Home

MASVINGO- Seasoned golfers in the country last week converged at Mucheke Old people’s home where they pampered the elderly inmates with various goodies as part of their community outreach programs

Members of Nomads Golf Club who included veteran pilot, Captain Vitalis Vengesai Muzenda, Masvingo captain, Brian Matake, vice captain in charge of charity in Midlands and Masvingo provinces, Pascal Mudzikisi and public relations officer, senior banker Calisto Rukuni donated 445kgs of mealie meal, 4kgs flour and 16kgs sugar to Mucheke Old People’s Home.

Superintendent of the Old People’s Home, Florida Chichena told The Midweek Watch that the institution has 15 inmates; 8 females and 7 males, with the oldest being 109 years old (pictured).

Mudzikisi said the Nomads is a group of golf players who heard the pleas of food shortages at the home and after they held the Masvingo Golf tournament the players pulled resources together to make the donation a success.

“We have an executive focusing on charity, we have been sent by the Golf Club members to bring these donations, we will continue to come with food stuffs each time we meet here in Masvingo.

“This is our main aim to help those in need and to support the home,” said Mudzikisi.

Chichena outlined the shortages facing the home that includes groceries, medication and medical doctors for the inmates.

“We also want diapers, lotion, bathing soaps, washing soaps and detergents,” said Chichena

A social worker on attachment, Ephert Sibanda also said that there is acute shortages of wheelchairs, the ones available have broken down and in need of repairs.

An inmate at Old People’s home Francis Mugari said, “We are in need of eye medication and also funding for eye operations.”

Although the institution realises rentals of US$45 from each of the 20 rooms that they let at the home, but the money is not enough for their monthly upkeep.
