Gain Cash & Carry lose US$18k to armed robbers

BIRCHENOUGH BRIDGE-ONE OF THE biggest wholesalers in the country, Gain Cash & Carry lost $18 000 to armed robbers who pounced on the shop at dawn on Monday.

The incident which shocked the Birchenough Bridge Growth Point happened at around 2:30am on Monday when 10 armed robbers arrived at the wholesaler which also houses Inbucks Cash Utility 24 and blew up a safe and stole cash after tying the hands and legs of the security guard manning the premises.

The armed robbers who were wearing face masks attacked Tapiwa Matsatsa (39) of Professional Security Company while he was doing perimeter checks and took away his pepper spray, cellphone and catapult.

They used iron bars to force entry the shop and blew up the Chubb safe and took US$12 122 and R61 580 before proceeding to Inbucks cash box where they took US$1 960.

When the robbers left the scene Tapiwa screamed for help and the shop manager, Vanessa Ndhlovu (39) who stays at the growth point went to make a police report.

Birchenough police attended the scene and managed to recover US$104 and R1000 at the scene.

Manicaland Province acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka said they are appealing to members of the public to assist in apprehending the robbers who are at large.
