Fitness challenges amidst Zim’s economic crisis

GWERU CITY-The new Zimbabwean and International boxing coach, Joseph Moyana says their field is no longer viable in Zimbabwe due to the economic crisis bedeviling the country.

Pursuing fitness goals can be an uphill battle for individuals due to the country’s economic problems where there is a serious shortage of disposable income.

Moyana who is passionate about fitness has had his dreams of personal growth and fitness being hindered by the economic challenges stemming from the country.

Gym memberships are going for as much US$60 per month and fitness gadgets are out of reach for an average person with some going for as much as US$300 for a fitness bike in the country.

‘I have always been passionate about fitness from a young age, I dreamt of building a strong and healthy body, envisioning myself as a role model in the field of fitness,” said Moyana.

In a world where fitness and health have become increasingly important, people from all walks of life aspire to improve their physical well-being. His dreams are under siege due to the economic hardships plaguing Zimbabwe. The country’s economy has been marred by hyperinflation, foreign currency shortages, and unemployment, leaving many Zimbabweans struggling to make ends meet.

As prices of basic commodities soar so are fees for attending fitness lessons and gyms in the country, making it difficult for people to prioritise fitness over food.

Investing in health and fitness has become a luxury that a few can afford.

He said, ‘In a normal economy, the path to fitness would involve spending money on gym memberships, nutritious food, and supplements. Unfortunately, in Zimbabwe’s current economic climate, these expenses have become exorbitant for the average citizen.’

Gym memberships have skyrocketed due to the inflation, making it difficult for people who are passionate about fitness to engage in the activity.

Similarly, nutrient-rich foods and supplements are now considered luxuries, forcing individuals to compromise on their nutritional needs.

Beyond financial constraints, the scarcity of fitness facilities and opportunities further compounds the matter of health living.

The economic downturn has resulted in many gyms closing down or operating under limited capacity due to insufficient resources. The lack of well-equipped fitness centers and trained professionals leaves individuals with minimal guidance and support on their fitness journeys.
