GWERU-All is set for the Diamond Volleyball Tournament for the weekend, in the mining town of Redcliff as 16 teams are expected to battle for honors.

With teams expected to be drawn across the province for the tourney, Diamond Volleyball Club spokesperson, Nyaradzo Makuyana said the event was the first of its kind in the Midlands.

She added that, Daimond Club pushed for the event in efforts to promote volleyball games in Zimbabwe by enhancing the girl child’s participation in sport.

“Diamond Volleyball Club, is set to host its tournament on Saturday and Sunday the 8th and 9th of October 2023 in Redcliff and it’s an open tournament.

“We are expecting a number of teams, namely, Midlands State University, Whawha, Josiah Tungamirai Airbase, Gweru City, Beitbridge Eagles, Bindura City, Kwekwe City, Naba, Harare, Falcon among other teams. So, it’s going to be historical as we put volleyball on the map.

“All the teams which are coming have paid an affiliation fee to the tournament, and the fee was pegged at US$50. This event is not limited rather its open to all who want to come and participate,” she said.

Tournament director, Munyaradzi Murema said, they were not only focusing on the girl child but also the boy child.

“In as much as we value the participation of the girl child, we say sporting is open to everyone. Coming up with the tourney in the Midlands Province was a way of decentralizing the games and bring them where most people can access them.

“Some of our players are coaches, some are referees, it’s because they were trained to groom young talent.

“Such inspiration builds in the mind of the upcoming talent so that we expose them to this game” he said.

Meanwhile a number of sponsors namely, Sheasham, Redcliff Municipality, itel Kwekwe, and the business community in Kwekwe and Gweru came on board to make the event a success.
