GWERU-The Midlands province is set to host this year’s Commissioner General of Police’s 21km road race with the sporting extravaganza slated for May 3 at Mkoba Teacher’s College.

Acting Midlands Provincial Police Spokesperson Assistant Inspector Fungai Ngawagare confirmed the development.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police would like to inform the general public, stakeholders and participants that the Commissioner General of Police Road Race, initially scheduled for 29 MARCH 2025, which was postponed has been re-scheduled.

“After careful consideration, we have re-scheduled the event to 3 May, 2025.

“The venue remains Mkoba Teacher’s College in Gweru.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and appreciate the understanding and cooperation of all parties involved. The event aims to promote community engagement, health, and wellness, while fostering a stronger relationship between the police and the public,” he said.

He said the event will be sponsored by Old Mutual Zimbabwe which has supported the sporting event since 2014.

He said participants shall be drawn from members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), other security organs, clubs, schools, corporates and the general public including elite athletes and joggers.

“We expect a total of 1 000 athletes to grace the occasion and participate in the 5 km, 10 km and 21km races.

“Registration fee is US$20 and shall include T-shirts and meals. There are lots of prizes to be won in all categories and first 800 finishers will also receive medals,” he said.

He said top ten winners in the open categories for both men and women will receive prize money.

In the junior categories for both men and women, only top three winners will get prizes.

He said the race is inclusive and open to everyone and registration is done online.

“Registration is open, with a fee of USD$20.

“Companies and institutions who wish to partner us can render support in any area of their choice at the same time marketing their products after paying a nominal fee to be agreed on,” he said.

He said the previous edition was held at Baobab Primary School in Victoria Falls and two Kenyan nationals participated.

Last year, Wayne Kabondo of Mr Pace Athletics Club won the men’s 21km open category race in 1.04.31 while Ethiel Pangiso of the ZRP Athletics Club won the women’s 21km race in a time of 1.17. 51.
