Chivi mental patient brutally axes 2 minors

CHIVI-A mental patient from Chidhume Village under Headman Kuvhirimara in Chivi axed to death two minors on Tuesday afternoon, leaving two others for dead and setting the family homestead on fire.

Masvingo provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the arrest of Moses Hungwe (37) for murdering Panashe Masvimbo (8) and Kunashe Chikwenya male (5) on the afternoon of February 13.

He said on the fateful day Hungwe was with his brother Terence Shiri (32) at home when he went to the family cemetery some 20m away where he started throwing stones at the graves.

He was refrained from destroying the tombstones by his brother who took him to a kitchen hut with the intentions of tying him with a rope, however Hungwe immediately picked an axe and threatened to strike his brother.

Shiri fled the homestead and rushed to Amos Chimbetete (76)’s homestead about 1km away for assistance.

While Shiri was away, Hungwe  tried to get hold of the three minors Panashe Masvimbo, Kunashe Chikwenya and a  3 year old (name not supplied) who all ran into the maize field with Hungwe in hot pursuit .

He managed to get hold of Panashe Masvimbo and struck him twice on the head with an axe and he died on the spot,

Hungwe caught up with Kunashe Chikwenya  and also struck him on the back of his head and died on the spot while the 3 year old child was left with a deep cut on the left side of his chick after being struck once with an axe.

He is currently battling for his life at Chivi District Hospital.

Amos Chimbetete heard cries of the minors in the field and he went to rescue them but was also attacked by Hungwe, he was left with several cuts in the head.

 Moses Muzondo (52) a neighbour arrived and was able to disarm the accused went back home where he went to set ablaze two houses.

 A police report was made who attended the scene and arrested Hungwe while Chimbetete and the minor was taken to Chivi district hospital for treatment.

 Hungwe is currently in police custody.
