Chitepo Law Clinic outreach programmes making a difference in communities

Great Zimbabwe University’s Herbert Chitepo Law School has launched mobile law clinic programmes in rural schools across Masvingo Province, educating students on domestic violence, child marriages, and drug and substance abuse.

In partnership with the Raoul Wallenberg institution, the outreach programmes have reached schools in Masvingo District, including Chirichoga, Mary Hugo, Morgenster, Mazambara, Mushandike, and Copota Secondary Schools.

Professor Victor Nkiwane from Herbert Chitepo Law School explained that these programmes aim to raise awareness among rural students about issues directly impacting them. He emphasized that law students are not only learning but also giving back to the community.

Students and staff from the schools have commended the Herbert Chitepo Law School for the initiative, highlighting the impact of these issues in their communities. Evelina Tsitsi Gama, Copota School head praised the initiative, emphasizing its role in educating students to combat child abuse and substance abuse.

Students like Joyce Katsanga expressed gratitude for the educational awareness raised through the programme, saying it has the potential to significantly empower students. Amina Njekeya from Mazambara High School praised the initiative for addressing issues such as child marriages and substance abuse that often go neglected in rural areas.

Similarly, students from Mazambara High School, Mushandike High School, and Chirichoga Secondary School expressed appreciation for the awareness campaigns, noting their potential to mitigate the challenges of child marriages and drug abuse in their communities.

At Morgenster High School, the GZU Law School team joined forces with medical doctor, Dr Clapperton Magara and his team who spoke on the dangers of drugs and substance abuse while the former team educated the students on child marriages and domestic violence.

Morgenster High School head, Steven  Chikwiro welcomed the programme saying it was important as it educates students on vital life skills.

The outreach programmes demonstrate the Herbert Chitepo Law School’s commitment to promoting human rights and addressing social issues through educational outreach in rural communities.
