Boxing legend Manyuchi to grace IBD celebrations

Bulawayo -The Zimbabwe Boxing Federation will be hosting the International Boxing Day (IBD) celebrations at the prestigious Palace Hotel in Bulawayo this weekend where former world boxing champion Charles Manyuchi will be the guest of honor.

Manyuchi, has made significant contributions towards the growth of boxing as a sport in Zimbabwe by establishing an academy named after him as well as encouraging upcoming boxers.

ZBF technical director Steven Masiyambumbi told The Midweek Watch that the IBD takes place every year on August 27.

This year they chose to celebrate the day on 24 August on Saturday as the actual date falls during the midweek where most people will be attending to official business but during the weekend the event is likely to attract more spectators.

Previously IDB successfully hosted the celebrations in the resort town of Victoria Falls and in the Democratic Republic of Congo

The event aims to promote the sport of boxing, recognize achievements, and foster a sense of community among boxing stakeholders. 

Boxing enthusiasts, officials, and athletes from across the country are expected to attend, making it a memorable day for the sport.

In addition, Manyuchi is spearheading efforts to elevate the sport in Masvingo Province as the advisor to the Masvingo Provincial Combat Boxing Sport Development Committee.

Early this month the acclaimed champion sponsored  a trip of boxing officials in Masvingo to Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions tournament held in Lusaka, Zambia.

Part of the mission was for the committee to gain insight into international boxing tournaments.

To further enhance the committee’s expertise, Manyuchi and his team are attending the Bulawayo International Boxing Day Celebrations.

Secretary general Yeukai Chingwenya praised Manyuchi’s initiatives in committing towards the growth of the sport in Masvingo and beyond.

She said participating in national and regional forums will help the Masvingo Provincial Combat Boxing Sport Development Committee up its bid to host the national boxing tournament in future.

 “His guidance is invaluable in our bid to host a successful National tournament slated for September 28.”

The committee has also received a significant boost with Manyuchi’s pledge to provide his ring for use at the upcoming tournament.

Patience Sengweni, a committee member representing Women and Girls Combat and Sports Development, expressed gratitude for Manyuchi’s support.

In a gesture of appreciation, Manyuchi is set to unveil a huge package to honor contributors to Combat Boxing Sport and names of the recipients will be announced soon.

In 2023 the IBD celebrations were held in the premier resort city of Mosi oa Tunya aka Vitoria Falls.
