Bus driver acquitted for killing a pedestrian

MASVINGO- A bus driver who was charged with culpable homicide has been found not guilty and acquitted by a Masvingo Magistrate, Ivy Jaona at the close of state case.

Simon Magaya (69) was accused of causing the death of a pedestrian Phinlus Mupambwi (34) in a fatal accident that occurred last year in August.

According to the state the bus hit the pedestrian along Harare-Masvingo road, at the 268 km peg. The person was standing on the continuous yellow line signalling all approaching traffic for a lift.

After the accident, the state said the pedestrian died on the spot.

He was charged with speeding and failing to keep his motor vehicle under proper control as well as failing to stop or act reasonably when the accident seemed imminent.

Tichaona Chakavarika prosecuted.
