Mashava – In response to the escalating issue of drug abuse in their community, residents of Mashava have initiated a unique solution: the Brighter Days Soccer Academy.

Brighter Days Academy.

Established in 2022 by Honest Chiriminga, 28, and Amon Manuel Banda, 42, the academy offers a safe haven for children and youth aged 6 to 23, allowing them to develop their soccer skills and engage in positive activities.

“We recruit players from ages 6 to 23,” explained Chiriminga. “The academy started in 2022 as a way to reduce drug and substance abuse. We also guide our children in life skills, instill our Zimbabwean culture, and foster a sense of community.”

Currently, the academy consists of 8 girls and 32 boys. While its primary focus is soccer, it aims to instill important values in all participants.

“We do not have a specific recruiting strategy; we welcome any child who is willing to play soccer,” Chiriminga added.

Though the academy is currently dedicated to soccer, the founders are considering expanding to include other sports, such as netball.

However, they face significant challenges, as the academy is self-funded through contributions from coaches and parents.

Despite these obstacles, the Brighter Days Soccer Academy has already seen remarkable success.

Three of its students have received scholarships to attend Pamushana High School, and one player, Emmanuel Kanhuru, is currently playing for the Lerumo Lions in the Motsepe League in South Africa.

“As a coach, I’m proud of our achievements,” said Amon Banda, the head coach. “We hope to see more girls joining our academy because empowering girls is crucial. However, we are also seeking sponsors to assist with training equipment, financial constraints, and logistical challenges.”

The coaches remain determined to continue their work, driven by their mantra “our future is brighter, and nothing will stop us from achieving success.”
