New Mayor for Masvingo City
Following the recalling of Masvingo City’s first female Mayor, Shantiele Chiwara, by self appointed CCC interim secretary general, Sengezo Tshabangu, today at 10am the councillors are going to elect a new Mayor for the ancient city.
Chiwara made history after being elected the first female and youngest mayor in Masvingo City, she has also made history for being the shortest saving Mayor in the country.
According to Urban Councils Act Section 29: 15, after 30 days following a recalling, death or resignation of a Mayor the Town Clerk is empowered to convene a meeting to elect a new mayor.
In a notice in the hands of The Midweek Watch, acting Town Clerk, Vitalis Shionhai will preside over the election of a new Mayor for Masvingo City.
“Yes, we are going ahead at 10am today with the election of a new Mayor, the media is not allowed in the chamber where the elections will be taking place,” said Shonhai when contacted this morning.
“Notice is hereby given that special Council meeting will be held in the Council Chamber, Municipal offices on Friday, 17 November 2023 at 10:00am to consider the items as set out on the agenda, and to take such action thereon as may be deemed advisable.

The notice was signed by Shonhai and addressed to all the 12 councillors for Masvingo City. Daniel Mberikunashe, current Deputy Mayor who is related to CCC leader, Nelson Chamisa is tipped to take over the hot seat.
