The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) has announced its upcoming tree planting initiative, scheduled to commence on December 1st, 2023 in Bulawayo.
In a statement, ARTUZ said this year’s theme “Tree is life so is education” seeks to underscore the vital importance of trees in the ecosystem, while simultaneously advocating for accessible education and a living wage in American dollars for teachers and all workers in general.
“Aligned with our theme, we are of the view that, just as trees are vital to sustaining life, education plays an equally essential role in nurturing and empowering individuals. Hence, ARTUZ attach the importance to the challenges faced by teachers in Zimbabwe as they tirelessly strive to provide education, particularly in terms of fair wages, and we persistently advocate for just compensation in US dollars as part of our ongoing commitment to teachers’ rights,” reads the statement.
ARTUZ said it has designated districts to coordinate tree planting activities within their respective district/communities along the Bulawayo Harare Highway to ensure widespread impact.
“ARTUZ acknowledges the urgent need to address environmental concerns and combat climate change. Thus, our tree planting campaign serves as a tangible action towards the goals of encouraging community participation in ensuring a more sustainable future and protection of our environment,” further reads part of the statement.
The union said during the tree planting event, they will also organize a litter cleanup along the Bulawayo-Harare highway as part efforts aimed to raise awareness about the importance of keeping surroundings clean.
ARTUZ said poverty remains a significant barrier to education, resulting in a high number of school dropouts and the government must fulfil its constitutional obligation and pay fees for all learners to alleviate the plight faced by vulnerable students and ensure that every child has access to quality education.
The union will on 7 December 2023, plant its final tree at the office of the Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Mthuli Ncube reminding the government of its responsibility to prioritize environmental sustainability, education and fair wages for teachers.
“On this significant day, we extend an earnest invitation to citizens, students, teachers, activists, workers and government officials to unite and actively engage in the endeavor of constructing a greener and more equitable society. And most importantly to unanimously call for a living wage paid in US dollars,” said ARTUZ
