Alert residents foil copper thieves plan in Zvish suburb

MIDWEEK REPORTER

ZVISHAVANE- Alert residents foiled thieves’ plan to steal copper cables from the leafy suburb of Hillview in the former asbestos mining town.

This development was confirmed to The Midweek watch by Shabanie-Mashaba Mine Properties acting general manager, Gift Rupiya.

He said that the attempt was made at midnight when he received a call at around 2am that there were intruders who had switched off the suburb as they wanted to steal copper cables.

Soon after witching off the lights the thieves were spotted while driving away with the copper cables in a Toyota Funcargo without number plates and with only one light.

Copper cables thieves have been wreaking havoc in Zvishavane although the cases had gone down in the last few months.

Law enforcements agents have been urging the residents to be always on the look out for copper cable thieves.

Rupiya encouraged the members of the community to be alert and make use of whatsapp groups to warn others and spread the message in the event of an attack by the unscrupulous elements in the society.

“The thieves are back as communities we need to be alert and spread the message quickly so that they can be swiftly accounted for before plunging the whole area into total darkness,” said Rupiya.
