In a bizarre case that left the Zvishavane community dumbfounded, Elias Makamu (22) from Zvishavane was brutally murdered for demanding his change after buying a plate of sadza, The MidWeek Watch can reveal.

The incident took place on 28 October 2023 around 7pm at Zim-China, Mimosa Turn-Off shops in Zvishavane.

The Police said on 26 October 2023, the now deceased, Makamu, bought a plate of sadza worth US$1-00 from Collen Takawira using a US$10-00 note and did not get his change in the process.

On 28 October 2023, Makamu went to the shops and requested for his change from Takawira resulting in a misunderstanding. Takawira then stabbed Makamu in the chest with an unknown sharp object before fleeing from the scene.

Makamu tried to pursue the suspect for about five metres but failed and fell down. He was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The matter was reported to the police who attended the scene of the gruesome murder for investigations.

Midlands Provincial Police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko is appealing for information regarding the whereabouts of the suspect.

“We are appealing for information leading to the arrest of Collen Takawira. We also urge members of the public to request a third party to help in solving disputes,” he added.

In an unrelated incident, one person died on the spot when the tow bar connecting two motor vehicles broke loose resulting in him losing control of the vehicle.

The incident occurred along Harare-Bulawayo Road, in Gweru on 28 October 2023 around 1520 hours.

It is alleged that Joseph Khumalo was driving a Nissan Hardboard double cab along the Harare-Bulawayo Road towing a Mercedes Benz ML which was being driven by Shumba Daniel (40) of Bulawayo.

Along the way the tow bar which was connecting the two vehicles broke loose and Joseph Khumalo lost control of his car and it veered off the road, overturned and landed on its side. Khumalo sustained serious head injuries and died on the spot.

Police attended the scene and investigations are underway.

Mahoko called upon motorists to exercise caution on the roads.

“We also urge the motoring public to use the standard measure and size of tow bars when they intend to offer such a service,” he added.
