BIRCHENOUGH BRIDGE-The country recorded a shocking 300% increase in road traffic deaths during the Heroes and Defence Forces Holidays, national Police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi has confirmed.
Nyathi said in 2022 during the same period five people perished on the roads as compared to 15 this year and there were 85 people injured this year and 29 last year.
In 2022 the country recorded 163 accidents and this year there was a reduction to 132, but fatal accidents surged from four to 12 this year.
“The ZRP reiterates that motorists should be patient on the roads and avoid overtaking when it is not safe to do so. Motorists should also prioritise the servicing of vehicles to ensure they are fit and secure to carry passengers or goods on the roads.
“Drivers should not speed in situations which are not safe to do so. Above all, others should adhere to all road rules and regulations in order to curb the continuous loss of lives through road traffic accidents,” pleaded Nyathi.
Meanwhile, the Police have released the names of the five people who died in a road traffic accident on August 11 at the 7km peg along Birchnough Bridge Chipinge Road.
