MASVINGO- Masvingo United Football Club is facing one of the biggest administrative crises in its recent history after a string of resignations within days, raising fresh questions about the stability of the club’s leadership.
Today, the club’s spokesperson, Omen Mafa, became the latest official to step down, following the resignation of head coach Saprine Muchabaya on Monday and club ambassador Collen Maboke last week.
In a resignation letter addressed to the club chairman, Mafa said he is stepping down with immediate effect after a section of the club’s supporters expressed opposition to his continued stay in the executive.
“It has been brought to my attention that there is a section of Masvingo United supporters who have taken the considered view that my continued presence in the main executive is affecting the proper administration of the club,” wrote Mafa.
Although he said the allegations against him were “not backed with evidence,” Mafa said he had chosen to resign in the best interests of the club.
“I remain part of the Una Una family, albeit as an ordinary supporter. Let football be the winner,” he said.
Mafa’s resignation comes amid growing turbulence within the club, with supporters reportedly demanding the removal of lawyers Omen Mafa, Collen Maboke and Philip Shumba.
Sources familiar with the developments told The Midweek Watch that Shumba informed fellow executive members through the club’s WhatsApp group that he was no longer part of the executive before exiting the group.
However, by the time of publication, he had not submitted a formal resignation letter.
The pressure on the trio reportedly followed claims by some supporters alleging that they were associated with an opposition political party while the club is sponsored by the ruling ZANU-PF party.
Further sources told The Midweek Watch that some supporters believe the departure of the three officials could pave the way for the release of the remaining sponsorship package which includes US$115 000, a vehicle and the club bus.
The departures of the head coach, ambassador and spokesperson within the space of a week have intensified concerns over the direction of the club as it navigates one of the most challenging periods in its recent history.
