MASVINGO-The iconic Masvingo Golf Club in the ancient city hosted a glittering club championship tournament on Saturday and Sunday where the youthful Cephas Ngwenya Jnr emerged the champion.

Ngwenya Jnr won the coveted title after getting the better of some of the finest amateur golfers numbering over 60.

The upcoming golfer will compete on June 20 at Hillside Golf Club in Mutare which hosts the highly anticipated Champions of Champions finals.

Champions of Champions is also regarded as one of Zimbabwe’s premier golfing competitions that offers both beauty and challenge in equal measure.

The 2025 Club Champion was Malvern Mutemachani who did not get the chance to defend the title.

On second position was Shadreck Chisiwa while Masvingo Golf Club vice-captain, Joseph Zawaira completed the top three line up.

Prizes were sponsored by Byword Motors, Welleast and Masvingo Golf Club.

Prominent pharmacist Joseph Maluleke won the most golf on the day, who promised to excel next year.

“I promise to do well next time, the setback was due to a back problem that I am recovering from, after I am fully recovered I will be back to my best,” said Maluluke.

Masvingo Golf Club is nestled within a tranquil natural setting suitable for business executives and, the course is characterised by its lush fairways, natural mature trees, strategic water hazards and the scenic views behind Victoria Junior for demanding golf shots.

Adding to the unique golfing experience is the abundant birds and reptiles that call the 9 hole course home.

The combination of nature, fairly exceptional course conditioning has helped establish Masvingo Golf Club course as one of the region’s most respected golfing venues.

The Club Championships represent one of the top competitive golf events at Masvingo Golf Club and provide members with the opportunity to test their skill, endurance and mental strength over two demanding days of stroke-play competition.

Unfortunately, Masvingo does not have ladies competition because they are few women who play golf in the ancient city.

While the club championship ultimately crown individual champions, they are also a celebration of the sport, bringing together members, families, sponsors and supporters in a festival atmosphere that highlights the camaraderie and traditions that make golf a sport for the business executive.

With the course in excellent condition players can always expect a stern test from a layout that rewards accuracy, strategic thinking and consistency.

Every hole presents its own challenge, while the water features and natural terrain ensure that no lead is ever completely secure.

Club Captain Brian Matake applauded the golfers for their professionalism and enthusiasm during the two day championship.

Masvingo Province Golf Union president Peter Nyaruwata paid tribute to sponsors and implored the golf community to keep supporting the juniors so that there is smooth succession of the unique sport.

The championship was also graced by veterans like Pascal Mudzikisi (former president), Rtd Major Clifford Mumbengegwi, Happy Tazviinga, former captain and veteran banker Calisto Rukuni, and prolific female golfer Rudo ‘Lulu The Planner’ Shoko among others.

Juniors who participated on the day include Modester Masiya, Emmanuel Masiya and Malvern Mutemachani.
