MUTARE-The Charles Manyuchi Boxing Academy, in partnership with the City Council, is set to stage an international boxing tournament dubbed ‘Pride of Mutare’ at Mutare Sports Club on May 23.

The event, which was officially launched at the council offices on Wednesday (6/5/26), is expected to draw top boxing talent from across Southern Africa.

The tournament will feature pugilists from Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, South Africa and Tanzania, with 17 bouts lined up for the day. Former World Boxing Council Silver Welterweight Champion Charles Manyuchi said he was delighted to return to Mutare, a city he credits for helping shape his boxing journey. “I am happy to come back to Mutare and contribute to the growth of boxing in a city where I also developed my talent,” he said.

Manyuchi, who once won gold at the National Youth Games hosted in Mutare, has since transitioned into boxing promoter as he works to nurture upcoming talent across the country. Having already organised tournaments in Harare, Masvingo and Chivhu, he now hopes to elevate boxing in Manicaland

“Above all, I am Zimbabwean and I feel at home wherever I go, whether it is Bulawayo, Chivhu or Mutare,” he added. Speaking during the launch, Charles Manyuchi Boxing Academy Marketing and Media Manager Nicola Chiunya described the tournament as more than just a sporting event.

“This competition is a celebration of discipline, talent and unity through sport. Mutare is ready to host an unforgettable boxing showcase,” Chiunya told The Midweek Watch.

She noted that Manicaland has a proud boxing heritage, having produced renowned fighters such as Snake Mandeya from Honde Valley.

“This tournament will play a significant role in developing boxing in the province and the country at large. It gives young boxers a platform to display their abilities, gain international exposure and pursue professional careers,” she said.

Chiunya also commended Mutare City Council for supporting the initiative and helping position the city as a destination for major sporting events. Mutare City Town Clerk Blessing Chafesuka pledged the local authority’s continued commitment to youth and sports development.

“Boxing is among the world’s most rewarding sports financially. Some of the biggest names in boxing have earned fortunes through the sport, so it is important that we continue creating opportunities for young people,” said Chafesuka.
