GWERU—TelOne FC finally broke their winless streak at Gibbo Stadium with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Triangle FC yesterday, handing interim coach Charles Mutero a winning start following the departure of Herbert Maruwa.
The result marked TelOne’s first set of maximum points this season and offered a timely boost to a side that had struggled for consistency, ultimately costing Maruwa his job last week after a string of poor results.
TelOne showed early intent and were rewarded when Jerry Chipangura carved open the Triangle defence with a precise pass that found Bruno Mtigo inside the box, who calmly slotted home to give the visitors the lead.
The WiFi boys returned from the break with renewed energy and doubled their advantage in the 56th minute.
A well-worked move saw Masilela turn provider, setting up Innocent Mucheneka, whose effort beat the goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
Triangle pulled one back just after the hour mark to set up a tense finish, but TelOne held firm to secure a crucial victory that could mark a turning point in their campaign.
Mutero, thrust into the spotlight following Maruwa’s exit, will be encouraged by the response from his players as he seeks to steady the team while the club hunts for a substantive head coach.
Maruwa’s departure came amid mounting pressure from supporters, with the club confirming the split as a “mutual agreement” after a run of disappointing results that had dragged TelOne closer to the relegation zone.
The Sunday victory not only lifts morale but also provides a foundation to rebuild their season, with Mutero now tasked with turning a moment of relief into sustained momentum.
