Masvingo Province has set an ambitious wheat target of 4000 hectares following heavy rains that filled most irrigation dams for the winter crop.

This ambitious target is a significant increase from last year’s 3000 hectares, which yielded an impressive 2.9 tonnes per hectare.
The Permanent Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Dr Addmore Pazvakavambwa expressed optimism about the upcoming season during the Wheat Seminar held at Masvingo Civic Centre 26 March 2025.
“We are prepared to have a better harvest this year, because of the heavy rains we received this year, 75% of the dams are over spilling, we urge our farmers to play a role so that we reach our target,” he said.
Provincial Agritex Director Caleb Mahoya emphasized the importance of the seminar in preparing farmers for the upcoming winter wheat planting season.
“This seminar is a way of preparing and conscientising farmers, reminding them of the best practices and techniques for a successful harvest, for the season which will start in mid April to the last week of May” he explained.
“Masvingo Province’s winter wheat production is crucial to the country’s food security, and the province’s farmers are confident that they can meet the target. With the support of the government and agricultural experts, the province is poised for a record-breaking harvest,” he added.
