GWERU-In a bid to promote Press freedom and uphold the integrity of democratic processes, the Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) has taken proactive steps to encourage journalists to prioritize their safety when covering elections.
Recognizing the unique challenges that arise during this critical period, the ZMC has implemented a comprehensive initiative to equip journalists with the necessary tools and knowledge to navigate potential risks effectively.
Speaking to journalists at the media and elections reporting training workshop, the ZMC chairperson – Prof Ruby Magosvongwe (pictured) said they have put in place measures to protect the journalists from harassment and threats prior to the August 23 harmonised elections.
‘We have come up with press jackets so that, our journalists can be easily recognized, hence I want to encourage every journalist to wear their press jackets when covering diaries so that they avoid being harassed and threatened during their line of duty,” Prof Magosvongwe said.
The ZMC has developed a set of comprehensive safety guidelines specifically addressing the unique challenges faced by journalists during elections.
These guidelines outline best practices for pre-election preparation, on-the-ground safety measures, handling sensitive information, and responding to potential threats.
Journalists are encouraged to familiarize themselves with these guidelines, enabling them to assess risks and take proactive steps to ensure their safety and well-being.
During the training workshop stakeholders recognized the importance of collaboration with security agencies, the ZMC works closely with law enforcement and election security officials to provide journalists with the necessary support and protection.
The ZMC facilitates dialogue between journalists and security agencies to establish channels for communication, report incidents, and seek assistance promptly.
‘We work very closely with the law enforcers to make sure that our journalists are protected as well, and I encourage them to work in solidarity as a way of protecting themselves during this election era, journalists should know they are one family’, she said.
The ZMC emphasizes the significance of proper identification and accreditation for journalists covering elections. This includes facilitating the accreditation process and issuing official press identification cards that enhance journalists’ credibility and ensure their access to polling stations and relevant events.
By promoting proper identification, the ZMC helps distinguish legitimate journalists from unauthorized individuals, contributing to a safer environment for media personnel.
