MASVINGO- The Zimbabwe Diamond Mineral and Allied Workers Union (ZIDAMWU) has applied for struggling diamond miner Riozim, Murowa Diamonds  to be placed under corporate rescue after the company failed to pay its workers for nearly five months.

ZIDAMWU secretary general Justice Chinhema said the company is on the verge of collapse, and corporate rescue may be the only viable solution to protect both workers and the mining company’s operations.

“Riozim Murowa has failed to pay its employees for close to five months.  We believe the company is collapsing due to serious mismanagement. Our members are caught between a rock and a hard place. They live far from their families and can no longer provide for them. We have applied for the company to be placed under corporate rescue to address the pressing grievances,” he said.

He said workers are struggling to meet basic needs including providing meals for their families and paying school fees for their children.

“The workers are struggling to meet basic needs including providing meals for their families, paying school fees and examination fees for their children.

“We believe that this development is crucial at this juncture so that worker’s concerns are addressed,” he said.

Last year, over 1 200 workers at Renco mine in Masvingo were in October dragged to court by the company for striking over unpaid salaries.
