The Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA) has applauded Tongaat Hulett for sponsoring, as well as hosting the country’s second largest Pro-Am golf tournament at Triangle Limited and Hippo Valley Estates from Friday March 1 to Sunday.

The ZGA president, Martin Chikwana extended his gratitude towards Tongaat Hulett for hosting such a big tournament after a long hiatus.

“We can only be grateful to Tongaat Hullet and thankful for their desire to develop the sport not only in Harare but throughout the country.

“Tongaat has been a partner of ZGA for a long time, they have always been there for the sport. For them to come up with this partnership or event is a remarkable achievement as the company has poured in USD$60 000 for professional players which is a lot of money,” said Chikwana.

During a press conference on Thursday in Harare, Tongaat Hullet head of corporate and industry affairs, Dr Dahlia Garwe said they are excited about the response from both players and the corporate world.

“The response so far has been amazing from both golfers and the corporate world who have come in a big way in partnering us through sponsorship of the tournament. Amongst the major sponsors are ZB Bank, who are the major sponsor, Cimas, ETG World, Natpak, Nyaradzo Group, Old Mutual, Doves, Delta, Econet, Ecocash, Minerva, NBS and Zuva Petroleum.

“We are pleased with the response and hope to have a bigger event next year,” said Dr Garwe.

Chikwana said the event is of importance since it is involving local, regional and international players.

“We have 6 or 8 players who have travelled all the way from South Africa, Ghana, Malawi and Zambia and some flew from Portugal and England.

“So, it has some international flavour to it and this shows that the tournament is big,” said Chikwana.

He also said an advance administrative team is already on the ground to ensure that everything flows smoothly from day one.

“We have a team of rules officials which is headed by our technical team and they have been on the ground for the past 2 days preparing for this historic event, their responsibilities include marking the golf courses and ensuring that when players arrive, it will be all systems go in terms of logistics, accommodation and transportation to and from golf courses,” said Chikwana.

The ZGA president encouraged people to play golf as it is one of the few sports where one can participate even at advanced age.

“Golf as a sport allows you to play even into the late stages of your life and still stay health because of the general walk it affords you and to continue relating with your friends and other people in different age groups which also assists in maintaining mental health,” said Chikwana.

There are 6 women, 4 professionals and 2 amateurs playing over the three day tournament and US$3000 has been set aside for amateurs golfers’ prizes.

The winners will be announced on Sunday March 3.
