MASVINGO – Zimbabwe Catholics’ Bishops Conference (ZCBC) has released a pastoral statement on August 23 based on Mark 10:11 “Take Courage, Stand up! Jesus is calling you.”
ZCBC appealed to the nation that the contest for the highest office in the land and other offices should not divide the nation.
“As we prepare for the elections, your shepherds would like to make an appeal to the nation that the contest of the highest office in the land and other offices should not divide us as a nation. We are one people, imbued with inalienable rights derived from who we are, thus as human beings we enjoy a certain human dignity that flows from our shared origins and destiny, we come from God and we return to God”.
“It is your duty and right as a citizen to vote therefore in so doing your vote is your personal decision and an expression of your freedom. Do not be intimidated, manipulated and coerced to vote against your will and refuse to be used in violent attacks against your fellow brothers and sisters”.
ZCBC went on to appeal to the politicians to distinguish themselves as noble men and women worthy of people’s votes since they have a huge responsibility on them.
“In these weeks you have spaces and the power to influence the citizens, we urge you to exercise this privilege responsibly and be responsible in your utterances and work to build and promotes peace”.
To the media, ZCBC appealed for non partisan reportage, be factual, report without fear or favour and cover all parties in the same manner.
Zimbabwe Electoral Commission was asked to deliver their mandate of preparing, facilitating, and delivering credible, free and fair elections.
ZCBC also appealed to the security sector and judicial officers and the courts to uphold justice and peace.
It also added that those who employ hate speech should be held accountable for their actions.
