A Zaka woman received the shock of her life for failing to monitor the movements of her 5 year old son when she found the lifeless body of the toddler floating in the family garden well.

Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the death of Blessed Tachiona (5) of Mandloro village in Zaka on 18 July by drowning as his mother, Melody Havasi, was busy transplanting tomato seedlings.

Dhewa said on the fateful day, the mother  gave her son sugarcane to chew while she was busy with her garden chores and lost track of her son’s movements.

She later discovered her son submerged in a well, and rushed to retrieve his body.

Zaka Court waived a post-mortem on the toddler, as no foul play was suspected.

Meanwhile police in Masvingo on the same day  also recorded a separate incident of death by drowning in Mashava after a 17 year old man who had gone to bath was found floating in quarry dam.

Dhewa told The Midweek Watch that Tafara Chouchi of Village Mushandike in Bosman Mashava drowned while bathing in the dam.

He said Stephen Damba (60) a villager herding cattle, saw the now deceased Chouchi entering the dam with the intentions of taking a bath.

He later heard noises coming from the dam and went to investigate and couldn’t locate the now deceased and he immediately alerted other villagers.

Chouchi’s body was later found floating in the dam and was taken to Masvingo Provincial Hospital for a post-mortem
