ZAKA- Zaka South Constituency Member of Parliament Clemence Chiduwa (pictured) has implored government to prioritise the construction of a bridge across Mutirikwi River downstream of Bangala Dam.
The call follows a tragedy where two people died after they were marooned at an island in Mutirikwi River after their makeshift canoe capsized.
The two, Brighton Rugwevera and Cliff Chikara all from Mushaya Village under Chief Bota were buried on Saturday.
Chiduwa said a number of lives were lost after villagers attempted to cross the flooded crocodile infested river either using makeshift canoes or through other means.
“There is need to urgently prioritise the construction of a bridge across Mutirikwi River that will connect Mushaya in Zaka South and Nyajena in Masvingo South.
“Where communities need to travel less than 2km just across the river, they are now travelling 190 km via Chiredzi,” he said.
A couple of weeks ago, Chiduwa who is the Budget and Finance Parliamentary Portfolio Committee chairperson told a feedback meeting on the national budget public hearing held at Chitsanga Hall that Government heeded to the calls by villagers in Chiredzi for prioritising the construction of Chilonga bridge.
