MASVINGO-The bail application for two men aged 35 and 33 who allegedly attempted to kidnap a 10-year-old boy at Yeukai Business Centre in Mucheke has been postponed to the 13th of March by a Masvingo Magistrate.

The two suspects had initially been remanded in custody to March 3 for the continuation of their bail application but the court deferred the matter to the 13th of March.

They will remain in custody pending the determination of the bail application.

It is the State’s case that the accused were driving a Toyota Prado without number plates when they allegedly attempted to abduct the minor.

The court heard that the child was playing with other children at Yeukai Shopping Centre when the suspects allegedly grabbed him and forced him into their vehicle.

The victim’s sibling who witnessed the incident reportedly alerted their mother who quickly rushed to the vehicle and started tussling with the men. With the assistance of members of the public who responded swiftly, the mother blocked the vehicle from fleeing, leading to the arrest of the two suspects.

The incident happened in the evening while the mother was selling fries outside Mongoyongoyo Sports Bar.

The State further alleges that one of the accused is employed at a local motor vehicle sales company while the other is reportedly married to a police officer who allegedly attempted to interfere with proceedings at the scene by claiming the duo was drunk.

The matter is expected to continue on the 13th of March at Masvingo Magistrate Court.
