MASVINGO– Young Women for Economic Development in partnership with their patron Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Ezra Chadzamira recently donated blankets and mealie-meal to inmates at Masvingo Remand Prison.

Speaking during the handover ceremony to the inmates Chadzamira said President Mnangagwa is against discrimination of inmates in the country’s prisons hence they decided to come up with the donations.

He said the gesture by Young Women for ED will go a long way in improving the conditions of prison inmates.

The young women took time to interact with the inmates and posing for pictures before they handed over their donation which included an assortment of blankets and mealie meal.

The Minister later had a tour of a borehole recently drilled with his assistance for use by the inmates.

Minister Chadzamira was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Dr Admore Pazvakavambwa and Member of Parliament Masvingo North Brian Mudumi.

“Whites tortured prisoners but now prisons are for correcting the inmates so that they become better members of society and that’s why we are here with them, spending time together as part of us.

“We thank also the ZPSC’s vision to become the leading correctional services provider in the region and beyond however, the donation by the Young Women for ED has come at the right time as it is part of achieving the Vision 2030.

“I am pleased to hear that there is a great improvement in terms of infrastructure development here at Masvingo Remand Prison and in all other prisons in Masvingo Province

“I take note of the Officers’ Residential houses that were built in line with the new Dispensation agenda under the able stewardship of his Excellency Cde Dr ED Mnangagwa and his second republic drive to cumulatively build 220 000 housing units for both rural and urban areas every year and 1,2 million units by the year 2030.

“No place and no one must be left behind, this will reduce the housing backlog we have of about 1,5 million units, as government, it is our responsibility to make sure that a conducive environment for rehabilitation in all our prisons is crafted with the relevant infrastructure put in place.“

Chief Correctional Officer, Memory Shuro said that Masvingo Remand is humbled by the support that it always get from Minister Chadzamira and also from the Young Women for ED.

“This is not the first time Minister Chadzamira has extended his helping hand to the ZPCS Masvingo Province, there is an array of developments that have come because of his assistance as the father of Masvingo Province

“Everyone has a potential to be in prison. It’s up to God’s plan so everyone must give a helping hand to them,” said Shuro.

Chairperson of the Young Women for ED Masvingo Province, Confidence Mukau said her organisation will continue to extend a helping hand to ZPCS  and will ensure they also supply sanitary pads for female inmates.
